No one single individual is credited with inventing the dress. Dresses most likely began as tunics with other material worn over the tunic such as a cloak, a skirt, an apron, or a gown, and many were tied with a sash or a belt. Women's tunics were longer than men's tunics because men also wore leggings or trousers of some type. Later, women began adding fabric to the tunics to show their status in society and the simple tunic evolved into dresses and gowns.
