Of the original crew of 237, only 18 sailors made it back alive, all on board the only surviving ship of the original five, the Victoria. The expedition's leader Ferdinand Magellan was not among them: he was killed in a skirmish on the Phillipines.

During the Age of Discovery (or, Exploration) in the 15th to 17th centuries, circumnavigation changed European understandings of the world dramatically. For one thing, their world became larger, as previously unknown land and water emerged on their maps. For another thing, it became rounder, as the ocean "highways" to east and west, which connected eastern and western civilizations, were finally discovered during the explorers' courageous circumnavigations of the globe.

It was Ferdinand Magellan, but he died in the middle of a quarrel along with fourty of his men, before completing the circumnavigation, so a captain named Sebastian del Cano took over and completed the voyage, there was one-hundred and fifteen survivors.
Magellan left Portugal for Spain in 1516. In 1517 he began preparing for the circumnavigation of the world. The voyage began in 1519 and ended in 1522. Magellan himself died in a battle in the Philippines in 1521.

Magellan and his five ships sailed from Seville on August 10, 1519 and left Spain on September 20, 1519. The one surviving ship returned to Spain on September 6, 1522, under the command of Juan Sebastian Elcano. Magellan died in a battle with natives in the Philippines on April 27, 1521.

The first RECORDED circumnavigation of the world was reportly by Juan Sebastian Elcano, who had been sailing on the expedition with Ferdinand Magellan before Magellan was killed in the Philippines in 1521. It was achieved between 1519 and 1522.
Ferdinand Magellan's journey around the world lasted about three years, from 1519 to 1522. Magellan himself died during the expedition in the Philippines, but his crew completed the first circumnavigation of the globe.

No nope it wasn't Columbus neither Magellan it was Juan Sebastian Elcano. Magellan didn't complete the circumnavigation because he died before the battle of Mactan in Pre colonial Philippines and Elcano continued the voyage back to Spain with Victoria (the only surviving ship of 5 from Magellan's expedition)
