Valentine was a priest who was scheduled for execution. He supposedly fell in love with a girl who would visit him. (priests were allowed to marry in the ancient times) Before being sent off to his fate, he was supposed to have written this girl a love letter and signed it "from your Valentine". That's one of the origins of the Valentine day cards.
