The reform crusades offered many middle-class women opportunities to escape the confines of home and enter public affairs.
There were a total of nine major crusades, with the first four considered the early crusades: the First Crusade (1096-1099), the Second Crusade (1147-1149), the Third Crusade (1189-1192), and the Fourth Crusade (1202-1204). The common factor among these early crusades was the desire to reclaim Jerusalem and other holy sites in the Levant from Muslim control, driven by religious fervor and the promise of spiritual rewards.
Spain was not involved in the Crusades primarily because it was already engaged in its own significant conflict during the same period: the Reconquista, which aimed to reclaim the Iberian Peninsula from Muslim rule. The Reconquista began in the early 8th century and continued until 1492, coinciding with the time of the Crusades. Additionally, by the time the Crusades were in full swing, many Spanish kingdoms had their own priorities focused on territorial expansion and consolidation rather than participating in distant campaigns in the Holy Land.
Charlemagne lived in the late 8th century and early 9th century.
No the crusades were not a mistake. Without them the world we live in today would most likely look quite different. While many died for what could be perceived as a religious-political power struggle on the part of the papacy the crusades were important. Europe would not have passed through the 2 renaissances it did (first being in early 12th century due to Norman conquest of Sicily and southern Italy). Europe benefitted hugely by making contact with the Islamic culture and receiving noteable technology and information from it. It was the Crusades that pushed Europe towards the Renaissance.Note: This is an unbiased and objective point of view. Those with more fundamental beliefs will no doubt provide different answers.
