In early years of the Church meat was considered a luxury and the common folk ate fish which was cheaper and more readily available. For those of means giving up meat was a sacrifice. However, today seafood is often more expensive than meat. To go out and eat a big dinner of shrimp or lobster sort of misses the point of Friday abstinence.
