Memorial Day, originally called Decoration Day, is a day of remembrance for those who have died in our nation's service. It is not important who was the very first, what is important is that Memorial Day was established. Memorial Day is not about division. It is about reconciliation; it is about coming together to honor those who gave their all. There are many stories as to its actual beginnings, with over two dozen cities and towns laying claim to being the birthplace of Memorial Day. There is also evidence that organized women's groups in the South were decorating graves before the end of the Civil War: While Waterloo N.Y. was officially declared the birthplace of Memorial Day by President Lyndon Johnson in May 1966.

Memorial Day is the day designated for honoring all US Military personnel who have perished during all wars and military actions in which the United States has been involved. Originally called Decoration Day it was observed on May 30 of every year from 1868 to 1970 no matter what day of the week that was. In 1967 Decoration Day was officially renamed as Memorial Day. In 1971 it was moved from May 30th to being the last Monday of May whatever date that is. Since that date change the importance of the holiday seems to have been diminished and now it seems to be known more as the unofficial beginning of summer.
