Usually, Americans will simply say "Happy Birthday" or "Happy Birthday, ______ (the person's name) to each other. In some instances, people will also specify the person's age. For example, someone might say "Happy seventeenth birthday!" However, this is generally only said by parents or adult family relatives to children, for whom getting older is desireable rather than abhorred. Because of this, it is usually not appropriate to say something like "Happy forty-fifth birthday" to an adult.
