• You could telephone each guest (not text them) and ask them for dinner or, in cards shops and even some large book stores you can buy nice invitations and you just have to fill in 'Dinner Party' at Jane Doe's home at 5 PM on August 13, 2010.

If you are inviting them to come from their place of residence, a written invitation is best. I suggest a week or two in advance (long enough for them to arrange transportation). If the distance is significant, you may want to advise your guest of accommodation in your area.

If they are "in town" visiting, it is acceptable to ask them in person or to telephone and ask them to join you for dinner. Be prepared for the possibility they may have their time "booked up".
