The New Year in Germany is celebrated on the 1st of January as per the Gregorian Calendar. People bid farewell to the old year and welcome in the New Year with food, drink, dancing, play games, exchanging wishes and even making new resolutions. The New Year's celebration begins with New Year's Eve. Silvester is the New Year's Eve in Germany. December 31st is the feast day of Saint Silvester.

A very popular tradition of telling the future called Bleigiessen is followed with great amount of excitement. By dropping molten lead into cold water and predicting the future of people from whatever shape it creates. If it takes on the shape of a heart or a ring it means wedding, the shape of ship means journey and a pig symbolizes plenty of food in the coming year.

New Year's Eve is a noisy affair, with many displays of fireworks. Celebrations are all about dancing, singing, drinking and having a grand meal. People like to spend time with their dear ones. As soon as the clock strikes 12 midnight, people can be seen hugging, kissing and wishing each other "Gutes Nue Jahr" or "Happy New Year". Church bells ringing loudly out over the towns and villages.
