Memorial Day is not a day for celebration. Traditionally it is a day to remember and honor those of the US Military who have paid the ultimate price and died during any war or military action that involved the United States. They fought to keep America free.

Unfortunately, since the Uniform Monday Holiday Act of 1971 moved the holiday from its original date of May 30 to the last Monday in the month of May so that federal employees could get another three-day weekend, much of the significance of the holiday has been lost. Nowadays it is mostly just considered to be the unofficial start of summer and people have barbecues and parties and do other fun things.
