Ash Wednesday is the first day of Lent, the 46-day period (40 days not counting Sundays) of self-sacrifice that precedes Easter Sunday. Although I am unsure of the connection between Ash Wednesday and Lent and Easter, I know that at least in the Roman Catholic denomination priests draw the sign of the cross on the foreheads of Catholics on Ash Wednesday using the ashes from the burning of the palm fronds left over from the previous year's Palm Sunday as they remind them that they came from dirt and will return to dirt, which sounds like a good reason to celebrate the Resurrection, which is what Easter is all about.
Ash Wednesday has fallen on February 13 on several occasions, notably in years like 1946, 1957, 1963, and 2013. The date of Ash Wednesday varies each year as it is determined by the ecclesiastical approximation of the March equinox. It occurs 46 days before Easter Sunday, which can lead to it falling on February 13 in certain years. For an exact count, one would need to reference a liturgical calendar.
