The 1st of May is not a major celebration in Ireland. The first Monday in May is now a bank holiday and the month of May is often seen as the start of summer in Ireland. In the past May Day was celebrated with things like bonfires as a symbol of the start of summer, but that is not done much now. It was known as Bealtaine, which is also the Irish language word for the month of May.
