How much money should you give a child under 5-years-old for a birthday gift?

Are you trying to delight the child, or impress the parents? I can't imagine a child under five being excited about money-- but maybe I am totally old-fashioned. Ask family for help in choosing something that will delight the child. If you're trying to impress the parents, the sky's the limit.

• I don't think this is an unusual question. Money is well accepted for any age. There is nothing worse than getting a lot of gifts you either don't like (won't hurt the person's feelings and ask for the bill so you can return it) or, you give money in this case so the parents can either put the money in a savings for the child, or, buy something the child wants in the line of toys. Any amount goes. Whatever you can afford is just fine. You can also give gift certificates for children to special (in restaurants) or playlands.

For kids up to seven, i'd say about five dollars. For kids 8-10, about ten dollars. For 11-13, 15. For kids older than that, about 20 or 25 dollars.

I'd say about 5-8 dollars. On my tenth birthday from friends, they gave me ten dollars so it can be any amount but it all depends on you.

AnswerYou can give as much as you like. It can be 5 - 10 dollars or more. Since the child is so young perhaps give the money to the parent to put in an interest bearing fund for the child for their education. Many people do this.

I think about five dollars. I have a six year old cousin and I'm sure she'd love to get money, but five dollars is enough. A five year old would probably want to get mostly candy, and for that, five dollars is definitely enough.
