Everyone likes to be acknowledged.
Having a special day to honour your mother or father or grandparents or friends or even your co-workers just brings it to mind and allows us to "make a fuss" over people we often take for granted.
It is not necessary for you to participate if you choose otherwise, for whatever reason, but it is certainly good manners to. This does not mean you must spend large amounts of money buying cards or gifts, but a verbal acknowledgment is never amiss.
