Since 1971, when the Uniform Monday Holiday Act went into effect, Memorial Day has always been observed on the last Monday of May. This holiday was first called Decoration Day. It was first established in 1868, just three years after the Civil War ended, and was always observed on May 30th. Each of the Southern states observed a similar holiday but they all had different names for it and it was on different days of the year in each state. After World War I the holiday was changed to honor the fallen soldiers of all wars in which the United States was involved and the southern states finally began to observe the same day as the north did. But the southern states still also observe their original different days. Here is a link with more history tied to the day.
