Most groups have traditional forms of recognizing young people who are reaching adulthood. The promenade (literally a walk designed for Display; to show off status, new finery, etc.) was traditionally part of most coming of age rituals, and was usually followed by a party or dance.

In modern times the promenade part of the ritual has been taken over by the party. It's traditionally the first time the young person wears the evening dress of an adult. When such things were done, the about-to-be-graduates were called "Miss" or "Mr" for the first time at the prom, and from that time on by adults in authority.

Nowadays, most people call everybody by their first names anyway, so the tradition has died. However, if you watch, you will see scenes in older movies where a teacher is talking to a student, and says, "Good to see you Mr. __", or "Good evening Miss ___. Are you having fun?" It no longer means anything but older audiences would know that a change of status was being acknowledged, and the young person is being welcomed to the ranks of adulthood.
