You are probably referring to an old Canadian tradition of removing the "wishbone" of a Christmas fowl, whether it be chicken, turkey, goose or duck, and storing it for a week or so until it is dry and brittle. It is then broken by two people who each make a secret wish beforehand. The wishbone seldom breaks into two exactly equal parts, so whoever gets the bigger part will have their wish fulfilled.

The "wishbone" is a breastbone near the neck of the fowl, and resembles a Y-shaped slingshot. During the breaking ceremony, it is necessary for each of the two participants to grasp one of the long arms of the Y by holding it in the crook of their bent baby finger; this is to ensure no unfair advantage. The participants then pull away from each other until the bone snaps - the one left holding the bigger half will have their wish fulfilled.

Usually, during dinner, only a couple of people (the hopelessly romantic) will call for rights to the wishbone (while the rest roll their eyes); therefore, conflicts are not usually encountered.
