I think the best gift to give to your girl friend is to give her a red rose and if u are a bit rich so buy her a jewelry, stuffed animals, a framed photo of yourself or a poem your wrote just for her.

It truly depends on the girl, and the type of relationship you two have.

If she really enjoys the typical cliche yet cute traditions: Red Roses, and a box of chocolates.

If you think it has progressed to a more serious level then jewelry would not be out of the ordinary.

Then again if you want to do something really special, try to think of an "inside joke" and display that through a gift.

Example: Say you have an inside joke about a cat, perhaps a stuffed cat with a heart around it. This will show humor as well as show your significant other that you put thought into their gift.
