The Indianapolis 500. The Indianapolis Motor Speedway was first built in 1909. The track surface was rebuilt using over 3 million bricks after 2 fatal accidents were caused by the breakup of the original tar and asphalt surface. This is why the racetrack has the nickname of "The Brickyard." Races were held during the Memorial Day weekend in 1910 but the first official Indy 500 race was held during the Memorial Day weekend in 1911. By 1938 most of the track had been repaved with asphalt again.
