Back in the early days people on a certain day in october were scared because on that day they thought spirits came and killed whoever was human. So the people began to wear disordered looking masks so the spirits wouldn't get them.
When Halloween (All Hallows Eve) first began, it was celebrated to 'scare' off the evil demons and spirits before All Saints Day, which is on November 1st. Nowadays, it is celebrated to dress up in costumes, and go Trick or Treating with family and friends.
