The first day of spring is always defined to be the vernal equinox. The timing is defined by and dependent on Earth Orbital and Rotational properties and normally falls on the 20th March except that sometimes in the year before a leap year it can fall on the 21st March. Very occasionally the equinox can also fall on the 19 March too.

In 1959 it fell on the 21st March at 08:55 in the morning.
