In the early 1900's the US Postal service began allowing local mail carriers & other postal employees to respond to letters addressed to Santa Claus. In 1940, because of the vast increase in the volume of mail addressed to Santa, the Postal Service invited charitable and other organizations to help write responses to the children. The "Letters to Santa" program continued to grow, and today there are a large number of individuals, companies, orgainizations, community groups, and others who aid the Post Office to answer each and every letter to Santa personally.
If you would like to help answer letters to Santa, the Postal Service has a volunteer application form. Check the link under the related links section.

When you mail a letter to Santa, the post office usually directs those letters to special programs, often operated by local volunteers or organizations, that handle Santa's correspondence.
