Diwali or Deepavali is the "festival of lights. Each day of Diwali represents victory of good over evil and light over darkness.

Diwali festival starts from 'Ashwin krushna dwadashi' as per Marathi calendar. This first day is Govatsa Dwadashi or Vasu-baras. Vasu-baras is a celebration held in honor of cows - regarded as mother by Hindus.

The second day is Dhantrayodashi or dhanteras. This day is for most of the hindu indian businessman to start their new financial year with pooja of dhana. This is also celebrated for doctor Dhanvantari.

The third day of the festival is Narakachaturdashi which marks the conquering over demon Narakasura by lord Krishna with his wife Satyabhama.

The fourth day is Laxmi poojan. It is amavasya and the goddess of wealth Laxmi is worshiped on this day. The businessman close their 'chopadi' and start a new chopadi.

The fifth day is Bali-pratipada. It is celebrated in the memory of benevolent asura king Bali. Vamana the dwarf incarnation of Lord Vishnu pushing the Mahabali to patala to save Indra.

The sixth day is Yama Dwitiya or Bhaubij on this day, brothers and sisters meet to express love and affection for each other.

In maharashtra diwali is celebrated till tulsi-vivah --kartik poornima.
