Jesus was crucified on Good Friday.*

- - -- ---

Another, different answer:

* - According to the Gospels, Jesus would have been crucified on Passover, which, in the year 31, would have fallen on a Wednesday. That would give him 3 days and 3 nights to be dead in his tomb so that Magdelene could find an empty tomb early Sunday morning.

Good Friday is just the day most Christians commemorate his crucifixion. This may have been because of a misinterperatation of John's description of it being the day before a Sabbath day, which were usually Saturdays... but there were also other Sabbaths - including the one that started right after Passover. Matthew 26:19, Mark 14:16 and Luke 22:13 note that the night before his crucifixion, they had Passover dinner, so, the next day, when he was put on the cross, would have been Passover (which was observed from sundown to sundown).

Another explanation for Good Friday being Good Friday instead of Good Wednesday is that in the year 147, the Pope changed things around (reportedly because his brother talked to an angel) so that people would still celebrate the Pasch or Passover Sabbath.

So, to answer the question of "What really did happen on Good Friday?," according to this timeline along with Mark 16:1 and Luke 23:56, that Friday, three ladies (Mary Magdelene, Jesus' mom, and Salome) went to the store and bought spices and ointments for Jesus' tomb.
