Wedding garters are decorative bands of fabric and elastic that a bride wears on her right thigh underneath her wedding gown. Often, near the end of the wedding reception, the groom will remove the garter from the bride's leg and toss it to the single male guests. This usually happens at the same time as the bride's bouquet toss to the single female guests. Sometimes bride's will even wear two garters at once. One to be tossed, and one that becomes a keepsake.

For a little historical background, wedding garters began as a European tradition in the 14th century when people believed that owning a piece of the bride's clothing would give them good luck.
