The positives are that in the end, it may make you a better person who is more knowledgeable and enlightened because you can now see beyond the hypocrisy of the unwanted tradition.

If the family tradition is making your life worse off and not making you a better person then you should strongly state your opinion and do not take part. Consistent unhealthy eating could be an example, smoking, drinking, watching too much TV etc.

On the flip side, if the family tradition is positive, even though you may not see it this way, you should just go with the flow and participate. Family reunions could be classified this way, as well as holiday gatherings.

If you care strongly enough about any subject, look into the pros and cons. Write them down and brainstorm. Come to a logical conclusion of whether or not this tradition makes you a better person or a weaker, more angry, unsettled human that is getting dragged down in a useless tradition that needs to end.

Maybe if you think about it long enough and have true passion for it, you can be the one to transform the tradition into something that suits you. Most people just go with the flow regardless of their feelings when it comes to traditions, so when you create your own ideal way of doing things and suggest it, most will not put up too great of a fight and thus you will have your cake and eat it too.
