Halloween started with the Celts. One night of the year (Halloween) the spirits of the dead would come to the houses and scratch at the doors. So the Celts would lock their doors and have parties inside to drown out the sounds of the dead. In modern times it is more of a fun party time or for kids to get some much desired candy.
