Salem is incredibly active on Halloween night. Most of the festivities occur downtown, where everyone gathers dressed in elaborate costumes. There's plenty of food available, as well as carnival rides if you have kids. Another popular destination is a costume party at the Hawthorne Hotel, which is located right next to the Common. You don't need concrete plans to go downtown; simply walking around and watching the variety of people go by is entertainment enough. However, it does get incredibly crowded, and your best bet is to park away from the downtown area and just walk. That way, you'll avoid getting stuck in traffic on your way out.
