It was the supposed date of the death Of William Shakespeare , English poet and playwright and also of the death of Miguel Cervantes, Spanish novelist who wrote Don Quixote.

As Spain was by then using the Gregorian calendar they were 10 days ahead of England which still used the old Julian calendar so it wasn't actually the same day, just the same date.
