Samuel Pepys, the famous English diarist, observed the New Year starting on March 25, in accordance with the Julian calendar, which was in use at the time. The adoption of the Gregorian calendar in England in 1752 shifted the New Year to January 1. Therefore, during Pepys's lifetime, he would have celebrated the New Year on March 25 until the calendar reform.
