It was formerly known as Decoration Day. This holiday began in 1868 and commemorates U.S. men and women who have died in military service to their country. It first began to honor Union soldiers who died during the American Civil War. They requested permission of their general, John A Logan, to decorate the gravesites of their fallen comrades (Hence the Decoration Day).
After World War I, it expanded to include those who died in any war or military action.
