Bethlehem
they saw King Herod who ruled over the Jews.
King Herod became very angry. He ordered all males under the age of 2 to be killed.
The King that was visited by the Wise Men was King Herod
Matthew 2 tells about the wise men comming to see Jesus in Bethlehem. The wise men talk to King Herod and tell him they are looking for the saviour. Herod tries to trick the wise men into revealing where the saviour is but the wise men are warned in a dream and don't see Herod again. Herod realizes the wise men have tricked him and so he plans to kill all male children under two years old. Joseph is warned in a dream and him and Mary their son go to live in Egypt until Herod dies.
King Herod asked the wise men to tell him where he could find Jesus, because Herod wanted to kill Jesus.
There were actually more than "three wise men" in Jesus' birth narrative. They usually travelled in large groups for protection. There were three gifts mentioned in Scripture but most certainly there were more than only three men. Their names are not mentioned. Also, they were not sent to kill baby Jesus; only to report back to Herod so he may come and worship Him.
The three wise men, or Magi, first encountered King Herod when they arrived in Jerusalem seeking the newborn King of the Jews. They sought Herod's guidance to find Jesus, as they had seen his star in the east. Herod, troubled by their inquiry, instructed them to find the child and report back to him, intending to locate Jesus for his own purposes.
The wise men followed the star to Jerusalem and then asked Herod the Great where the "new born King" was to be born. Herod inquired of the chief priests and scribes and they told him, Bethlehem. Then the wise men followed the star to where Jesus was.
An angel of the Lord warned the wise men in a dream about King Herod's intention to kill Jesus. Following this divine warning, the wise men chose not to return to Herod and instead took a different route back to their country. This event is described in the Gospel of Matthew, specifically in Matthew 2:12.
They escaped to Egypt to escape from King Herod because the Wise Men told him about Jesus (they didn't know they were putting him in danger he told them he would send presents and things)and he was jealus. God told the Wise men not to go back and tell King Herod because he would kill Jesus but King Herod then orded every new born to be killed.
Because after the wise men visited Herod and asked about the new king, Herod order children 2 and under to be slaughtered all we know is that Jesus must have been under 2 years of age. Tradition tells us that there were 3 gifts but we are not sure of the number of wise men that made the journey and that Jesus was probably in the city and not the stable when they arrived.
Herod (Herod the Great, Herod I) has three sons whom inherited his kingdom as decided by the Romans after his death. His son's name are: Herod Archelaus (Judea), Herod Antipas (Galilee, Peraea), and Philip the Tetrarch (Jordan).
