The Happy Medium lives in the realm of the fifth dimension, a place that transcends time and space. In "A Wrinkle in Time" by Madeleine L'Engle, she is depicted as a whimsical character who helps the protagonists navigate their journey. Her home is characterized by a blend of light and darkness, symbolizing balance and harmony. Through her guidance, she offers insight and perspective on the challenges the characters face.
To strike a happy medium is to reach a compromise that is agreeable to all.

Well, when the Mrs. Who, Mrs.Which, and Mrs.Whatsit ask the Happy Medium to show the children Earth, the Happy Medium first zooms in onto Mars, which was apparently "beautiful" with the ice caps on top. The Happy Medium didn't want to see the "Dark Thing" which the children viewed earlier on in the story, whilst resting on Uriel. But, the reason the Happy Medium did NOT want to show the children Earth was because she didn't want to show them the "Dark Thing" on their planet. However, once they see it, they become determined to fight this "Dark Thing."
