Christmas night in 1776.
They scored a victory at the Battle of Trenton on December 26, 1776. After famously crossing the Delaware River from Pennsylvania into New Jersey on Christmas night, they marched to Trenton in frigid ice and snow, surprising the Hessian garrison there.
Washington attacked on the night of Christmas. He didn't really attack the Britians but instead attacked German hessians. The war was supposedly "called off" for the winter, and therefore the attack was unexpected.
because he attacked the hessians by suprise in the middle of the night.
The surprise attack on Christmas night 1776 was the first major victory by the colonial army headed y George Washington. The group of troops from Trenton , NJ surprised the Hessian forces who were groggy after the Christmas celebrations.
Their first much needed victory was at Trenton, New Jersey. General Washington and his men marched nine miles through sleet and snow to the garrison held by the enemy. These were not British, but mercinaries, fighting solely for money. Germans paid by the British, Hessians. But they were lulled into confidence by the storm, and it was Christmas. So most of the soldiers, to put it honestly, got drunk off of rum. Most were still sleeping it off from the night before, and so the Americans launched a surprise attack on the ill-prepared Hessians. 30 of the Germans were killed, 918 captives taken, and 6 Hessian cannons were taken.
