Myrrh and frankincense have had spiritual significance since ancient times and they also were adopted as medicines for physical ailments. When referring to this pair of herbs, Westerners might immediately think of their historic importance in religion. The herbs are best known through the story of the Three Wise Men (Magi) delivering gold, frankincense, and myrrh for the baby Jesus; myrrh was also used to anoint Jesus' body after the crucifixion. These herbs, valued like gold, were mentioned repeatedly in the Old Testament, in instructions to Moses about making incense and anointing oil.
Frankincense and myrrh are aromatic resins derived from the sap of specific trees. Frankincense comes from the Boswellia tree, while myrrh is sourced from the Commiphora tree. Both have been used for centuries in traditional medicine, perfumes, and religious rituals, particularly in ancient cultures. They are often associated with the gifts given to Jesus by the Magi in the Christian tradition.
The 3 Wise men from the East thought they were going to meet a great king and so they brought the most precious things they could think of. Frankincense is the dried sap from a tree in Arabia and it is expensive. Myrrh is also the dried sap of a tree in Arabia. Both of these have a very strong smell. Frankincense is burned to help cover bad odors. Myrrh was used partly as a perfume. The last gift was gold.
Frankincense is typically a resin that appears in small, crystal-like nuggets that range in color from white to pale yellow. Myrrh is also a resin but is darker in color, ranging from reddish-brown to black. Both resins have a distinct aromatic scent when burned.
