Some form of observing Lent has been around since apostolic times. It is a manner to remember the 40 days Our Lord spent fasting and praying in the desert before he began his public ministry. However, there was no formalized or standardized practice. When Constantine legalized Christianity the Council of Nicea in 325 recognized that there should be a 40 day period of fasting and prayer before Easter and by the end of the 4th century it became formalized.
