Con Ed was not too keen on the idea as they recognized the obvious fire hazards. Even to this day, trees are known to collapse in storms and cause power outages.

When Christmas started going around, people started putting candles on their trees (don't ask why) and it started many house fires. When Edison came out with the light bulb, everyone decided it was safer. This is all i know.
I think it's just a natural progression from the Victorian times when would actually burn candles on their trees. With the invention of electricity, light bulbs etc, came the Fairy Lights we use today. Not necessarily prettier, but a whole lot safer!

When you are placing motion sensor lights, you need to take into account the trees and bushes. Also placing them in places where they will be able to turn on if the sensor is triggered.
