Who is credited with decorating trees with lights and why did he do it?

Christmas trees come from Germany and the lights were candles on the trees. The sources of this tradition comes from the ancient tribes that saw the fir tree as eternal since it was the only living plant in the dead of winter. When the Catholic Church began to bring the Christian religion to the tribes they used the tree to describe the trinity. It has 3 points and with this they explained it represented the Father, Son, and Holy Ghost.
