Who leads the Passover seder?

Passover is celebrated primarily in the home. The first night in Israel and the first two nights outside of Israel involve the Seder. This is a religious service where the story of the Exodus is recounted around the dinner table. The people involved are family and friends.

Traditionally, the "eldest male Jew" is the leader of the Passover seder. He reads (or asks others to read) portions of the Haggadah, and organizes the religious part of the meal. A Passover seder is traditionally a FAMILY event, so the leader is generally the father or grandfather of the family. In some community seders, the rabbi or cantor may lead.

The purpose of the Passover seder (the word "seder" means "order" or "sequence") is the retelling of the story of the Exodus from Egypt. Done properly, the entire proceeding is a sort of "multimedia presentation" of the event. There are assigned roles (the youngest child is assigned to ask the Four Questions, the "Mah Nishtanah" in which the child asks "Why is this night different from all other nights?" and the eldest Jew answers the questions. The Seder plate provides examples and promotes discussion of the origin of Passover and the meaning of Passover to Jews today.
