The holiday deepavali is the festival of lights. Hindus clean out their homes and light diyas from outside to the inside of their homes. This is to light the way so god can come inside of our houses. It is quite interesting that when we look at the diyas at night, the diyas far away are unlit but the ones closer to home is still lit. Also, deepavali is to celebrate Rama and Sita going back to Ayodhya after being exiled for 14 years. This is what my mother told me plus some observations of my own. Ihope this helps.

Yes, I do believe Hindus celebrate birthdays, eg. Lord Krishna's "Janam Ashmi" or birthdate (appearance). I celebrate my birthday and so does my whole family.
