New Year's Day and Christmas Day of the same year never fall on the same day. The 1st of January 1945 was on a Monday and the 25th of December 1945 was on a Tuesday. That is completely normal. A week after Christmas Day is New Year's Day, but that is New Year's Day of the following year. So Christmas Day 1945 would have been on the same day of the week as New Year's Day 1946, the next year. In the same way, Christmas Day 1944 and New Year's Day 1945 were on the same day of the week.

Why did April 18 fall on Sunday twice between 1934 and 1945 when it didn't fall on Wednesday between these two years?

The Wednesday was skipped over due to the leap year in 1940. It was on a Tuesday in 1939. As 1940 was a leap year, it skipped over the Wednesday, and it was on a Thursday. It was not until 1945 that Wednesday came round again. Between 1934 and 1945 is an 11 year gap. That length of time without a date occurring on the same day is very common. A date happens on the same day again every 5, 6 or 11 years. It depends on how the leap years fall in the period.

Oh, dude, Christmas Day and New Year's Day fall in the same year every year. I mean, it's not like they're gonna skip a year and be like, "Nah, we're gonna take a break this time." So, yeah, they're always in the same year. Like, every year.

Is Wednesday the best day for Christmas to fall on?

It doesn't matter. Christmas Day is not influenced by the day of the week it is on. It always feels the same, no matter what day of the week it is on. So whether it is on a weekday or a weekend, there is no difference. So no day is best for Christmas Day to fall on.

Does Christmas Day ever fall on a Wednesday?

Yes, Christmas Day can fall on a Wednesday. Christmas Day is on December 25th each year, and the day of the week it falls on changes annually. To determine if Christmas falls on a Wednesday, one would need to consult a calendar for that specific year.

Why does Christmas always fall on Thursday in the leap year halfway between two odd-numbered years with Christmas on Sunday?

There is a pattern in the way days and dates fall. If Christmas Day is on a Sunday 3 years before a leap year, then it will always follow that the Christmas Days in the next years are a Monday, a Tuesday, and for the leap year Wednesday will be skipped and Christmas Day will be on a Thursday. Follow on for another 3 years and you get Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Leap years are always even, so if it is 3 years before a leap year, then the first year that the Sunday is on has to be odd, as will the year 3 years after a leap year. These patterns are common and you could look at other specific combinations of dates and days in the same way and find recurring patterns there too.
