To commemorate Saint Patrick, and the Irish people and Irish heritage of which he is the patron.

Patrick grew up in England. His father was a strong believer in God but Patrick was not and was a trouble maker. One day Irish soldiers attacked their town and Patrick was captured and sent to Ireland. He was originally going to be a sacrifice to their gods, but a sheep herder made Patrick his slave. He served the man for many years and was even allowed to roam around with the sheep. So one day God told him there was a ship for him to go on back to England, so when his owner refused to free him, he just left. At the ship, he got passage by taking care of the animals on board. He went home, but he felt God calling him to go once again to Ireland to preach about God. In Ireland he defied their god's customs and this drew the attention of the king. somehow (i don't remember exactly) Patrick must have performed a miracle or something like that and the king listened to him. Soon many Irish people came to know the lord because of him and that is why Irish people and Americans (because many Irish live in America) celebrate Saint Patrick's day.

St. Patrick's day is celebrated not only as a mark of respect to a great saint but also as a reflection of the cultural tradition of Ireland and the growing sense of it nationalistic pride
