Why is Friday the 13th is considered an unlucky day?

It’s a little murky, but the origin of this superstition probably goes back to the Last Supper attended by Jesus Christ and his 12 disciples the night before his crucifixion on Good Friday. The 13th person has been associated with Judas Iscariot, who betrayed Christ. Additionally, the number 13 is considered “imperfect” when compared to 12, since there are 12 months in a year, 12 days of Christmas, etc.

A connection has also been made to King Philip IV of France who arrested (and later executed) hundreds of the Knights Templar on Friday, Oct. 13, 1307.

You kind of have the upper hand on that because a lot of people in the military have some sort of security clearance IT Job for those of us that did not serve in the military it’s a little bit more difficult and so you have to go through.

That process to get the security clearance and from what I know it could be a little bit expensive and it’s along drawn-out process. Because it just involves all kinds of security checks on you background checks and all this kind of stuff so there’s a lot of there’s a lot of you know red tape.

I guess if you look at it that way that you’ve got to go through just to get in here okay so if you’re starting from scratch like for me. Okay I’ve never been in the military if I wanted to go get a government job it would probably be a six-month process for me and some people. Don’t have six months to wait around they need a job now right so that’s one of the key things to remember there.

Friday and the number 13 have always been unlucky in their own right, says Steve Roud, author of The Penguin Guide to the Superstitions of Britain and Ireland.

"Because Friday was the day of the crucifixion, Fridays were always regarded as a day of penance and abstinence.

"This religious belief spilled over into a general dislike of starting anything - or doing anything important - on a Friday."

To further compound the chance of peril, an urban legend started circulating sometime in the 1690s that it was unlucky to have 13 people around a table or in a group, he explains.

Folklorist Anne Marie Lagram - herself a "strong believer" - says theories behind "unlucky 13" include the number of people present at the Last Supper or the number of witches to make a coven.

But it was the Victorians who put the two together, says the author of the Country Wisdom and Folklore Diary.

"They were intrigued by folklore and put Friday and 13 together and created a doubly unlucky day."
