Veteran's Day is a national holiday in the United States. It is a day that honors American soldiers, alive or dead, who have fought in any war in the service of the United States Armed Forces. It is celebrated on November 11 each year. If November 11 falls on a weekend, there will be celebration on that day, but also a national holiday the following Monday.
Gerald R. Ford was the first to declare November 11th a holiday.
November 11th was declared a national holiday, Armistice Day, by the legislative bodies of Allied countries after the end of World War I. It commemorated the cessation of hostilities between the Allies and Germany. After World War II, Congress (in the US) and Parliament (in the UK) changed the name of the holiday to "Veterans Day" and "Remembrance Day", respectively.

Although originally scheduled for celebration on November 11 of every year, starting in 1971 Veterans Day was moved to the fourth Monday of October. In 1978 it was moved back to its original celebration on November 11. Since this change, there has been a trend against being closed on the holiday. It began with businesses (excluding banks) and in recent years some schools and local governments have also chosen to remain open.
