Because on the 11th minute of the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month the Armistice to end the War to End All Wars was signed, bringing an end to the hostilities of World War One.
Veteran's Day was originally "Armistice Day", to observe the end of WWI by armistice on the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month, 1918.

Armistice was declared on November 11 of 1919. It was then called Armistice day. Later on it was declared Veterans Day in order to honor all who have served in the military.
