In the early middle ages the Catholic church wanted to have Christian celebrations, but all the people were celebrating pagan holidays. The Winter solace is one of those days and it falls around the 25th of December. It was easier to use a day that was all ready part of people's lives than to add a new one. So, December 25 was chosen for Christ Mass.
