We just bought 2 of the ixl's for our children for Christmas. I am a librarian, and we bought one at my library a few months ago. I was able to set up 2 of the devices without a hitch. However, I'm on the third time around, and am having this same problem. My husband is very tech-savvy. We've finally (after 2 hours of fighting with this thing) been able to find out the problem. Apparently, the device is not pushing the sd card in far enough for the device to be able to read it. The problem is similar to what we all experienced when we were kids with old school Nintendo. If we held the sd card in while loading the software, it worked like a charm; however, the minute you take your finger off and it releases and clicks into place, an error occurs and the device won't read the card again.
Okay, so now that we know what the problem is, how do we fix it. Well, you could send it back and get a new one. That is probably the smart thing to do. But if you are anything like us and just want the thing to work on Christmas morning when your kid opens it, then you have to get very technical or, provide a 'fix'! You can fix this problem the same way we were able to get Mario and Luigi back when we were kids. Take a real small piece of paper and fold it up so it's sturdy enough to hold the sd card down further than what the device is able to do. Then quickly slide the paper and sd card in and hurry up and screw the thing shut. It works!
