It is for good luck and there is a legend saying that there was a monster called "年" (nian) and he ate people once a year. Then a old man told everybody to make loud noises and have alot of red everywhere because"年"was scared of loud noises and red. So on the day that"年"came, they made loud noises and put up red everywhere and nian was scared and ran away without eating anybody. So people still do the same thing and they make the 红包( red packet) red.

Put the correct amount of postage stamp on the envelope, address the envelope and then post the envelope.
depends on the size and weight Right now stamps are 44 cents for every 10 pages of a normal Business Letter envelope. So if this is 10 pages and LESS you will need one 44 cent stamp. If it is more you will want to put extra stamps on it. Best thing to do take the letter to the post office and mail it if you can they will weigh it and give you an exact accurate weight to mail it. As long as it is in a business envelope, long envelope and not a manila envelope or box. It is that for 10 pages or LESS 44 cent stamp.

'koden'. This is a donation you give to the family to help pay for funeral costs. It can range from 2000 yen to 50,000 yen. The money should be placed into a special envelope (with black and white ribbons or wire) and the amount of the koden will vary according to where the funeral is held and how well you know the deceased. The notes in the envelope should be new or look new (ironed) and the envelope should have your name on the front and the amount on the back. The money goes to pay the funeral costs and any remaining is given to the family.
