Bikes can be measured in a few ways. The most common measurement is the tire size. For instance if you see a listing for a 20" mongoose bmx bike it means the tires are 20". another way they are measured is the height from the ground to the seat and the length from front of frame to back without parts on it

Bike tyres are a bit floppy, so they're a bit difficult to measure accurately. Usually you're better off looking for where the dimensions are printed on the tyre. Usually on the sidewall somewhere. On www.sheldonbrown.com there's a nice chapter about tyre sizes. Notice that fractional sizes and decimal sizes aren't interchangeable, even if the numbers looks the same.

Easiest is if they have the tires on, as tires usually carry their size written on their sidewalls. If that isn't the case you can often find the size stamped into the rim, or on a label. If that too fails all that remains is to bring out the tape measure. By counting spoke holes you can make sure that you're measuring across the very center of the rim. Keep in mind that the diameter used to describe a rim isn't the outer dia of the rim, but rather the BSD, Bead Seat Diameter, which is a few mm inside of the actual outer rim edge.

easiest is to read on them. Tires always have the size printed on the sidewall. Tubes usually do. or simply buy new ones according to tire size.
