Water is a renewable resource and doesn't 'go away.' It can be used over and over again, but it typically has to go through the entire water cycle to do so. This creates a huge time gap between when it is used until it evaporates, falls back to the earth and then is transported back to the point of use. This actually takes energy which will have an affect on the weather and the entire environment.

The other big waste associated with water is the energy that is used in cleaning and moving it. Wasted water means that more work is required to run it through the cleaning process, putting excess burden on the sewage treatment plants. And any water wasted means that there is that much less water to use for other important things such as drinking and irrigation.
